Madison's Three Little Monkey's Class 06.2012

I signed Madison up for a science class at 3 Little Monkeys (a cute little gift shop).  She had so much fun learning new things.  She loved asking questions and figuring out how each experiment worked.  There was lots for her to do and learn.  I am glad that we decided to do this.

This is Polymer Snow.  This is the stuff that is used in diapers.  The assistant put these little grains of white sand in her hand, then added a small amount of water.  Voila!  She has powdered snow.  This is also the snow they use on the mountains when they make snow.  It was soft & fluffy.  All we have to do is let it dry, then add salt, and it will be back to the small grain form.  Then we can do it again!

 

The next experiment was Polymer Gel.  The assistant put little crystal rocks in the bottom of the cup, then added a little water.  It turned into gel.  We could turn the cup upside down and this gel wouldn't move a bit.  But it was soft and gooey when she put her finger in it.  She wasn't fond of the gooey, stickiness of it.

This was the "Tornado" experiment.  The kids shook the bottles in a circular motion, then with the bubbles, a tornado would form.  She really liked this one!

This next station were Polymer Beads.  These are the little gel balls you can put in the bottom of a vase for decoration, and you mix them with water to make them grow bigger.  She got a whole bunch of rainbow ones.  The one she is holding in this picture is a miniature brain!  It grew about 5X that size.  She also got some blue roses that are pretty big as well.

This is the "Bloody Fingerprints"!  They sprayed Windex on the child's finger, and pressed it onto these yellow pieces of paper.  The result, a blood-like fingerprint.

The last experiment was Magic Sand.  The children scooped up the green sand in a small spoon.  Then they emerged the sand into the water.  When they brought the sand out of the water, it was completely dry.  Madison LOVED this one.

Nate used to take apart the toaster, waffle iron, and hand mixers to figure out how they worked.  Let's hope she doesn't get that curious! :)  Love: The Morgan Family
